Cutting composite without delamination.

Carbon and glass fibre reinforced composite is built up in layers, and that is exactly where the risk sits: if the jet gets between those layers, the part delaminates. A waterjet cuts cold, so the mechanical properties stay intact, and with a pre-drilled pilot hole the cut starts on a clean point. Cutting from sheet and finishing existing material go through the same setup.

Why cutting cold matters

Heat affects composite. Water does not.

Laser and plasma cut with heat, and heat leaves a zone where the material changes property. On a structural part that has to keep its strength under load, that is the difference between a part you can use and one you throw away.

A waterjet works with water under high pressure and a fine cutting sand in the jet. Heat does not affect the material: no warping, no microcracks, no discolouration. What comes off the table keeps the mechanical properties you need.

What sits under the head

From carbon fibre to glass fibre reinforced plastic.

We cut almost everything, among them carbon and glass fibre reinforced composites and reinforced thermoplastics. Composite always goes with abrasive: the fine cutting sand in the jet does the cutting. Whether you cut a new part from sheet or finish existing material, the process stays the same.

Where the cut begins

Drill first, then cut.

On layered material the start of the cut is the sensitive moment. If the jet has to make its own hole, it can get between the layers and cause delamination. The DR-4 is an optional drill unit on the X-carriage that first drills a pilot hole mechanically, all the way through the material. The waterjet starts from that hole and finishes the contour.

That way every cut starts on a clean, pre-drilled point instead of on a hole pierced by the jet. The DR-4 is an addition to the cutting head, not a replacement: you combine it with the 2D or 2.5D cutting head on the same machine.

Customer in practice

Composite that gets no second chance.

On 1 April 2025 we handed over a waterjet cutting machine to Logistics Centre Woensdrecht, Dongen site. Since then 982 Squadron has been working metal, plastic, composite and reinforced concrete on one table there. The material range is broad and unpredictable: one job calls for a composite that is scarce and expensive, the next for traditional sheet metal.

Once it is set up the machine keeps running, even when the operator starts on something else. For a workshop that cannot simply expand its staffing, that is not a side benefit but the point.
