982 Squadron cuts its own material
On 1 April 2025 we handed over a waterjet cutting machine to Logistics Centre Woensdrecht, Dongen site. Since then 982 Squadron has been working metal, plastics, composite and reinforced concrete there on one table. Without outsourcing, and without anyone having to stand beside it.
One workshop, everything that comes in
Within Logistics Centre Woensdrecht, 982 Squadron develops and produces high-grade products, among them communications equipment. The workshop also keeps systems running that have been in place for years. Modern equipment and older installations therefore pass across the same bench.
That makes the range of materials wide and unpredictable. One job calls for a composite that is scarce and expensive, the next for traditional sheet metal. Anyone covering that with different processes needs a separate machine for every material type, plus the people who can handle them. That is exactly where it pinches: the knowledge is there, the hands are scarce.

Four materials,
one cutting head.
A waterjet does not ask what lies underneath. It cuts cold, so the structure of the material stays intact and there is no heat-affected zone to work away later. What comes off the table is finished.
Operators set the work up via the console and call up maintenance information there as well.
- Metals: from sheet metal to the heavier grades, in the same setup
- Plastics: no melt edge, no discolouration along the cut
- Composites: including the modern, scarce materials for which there is no second chance
- Reinforced concrete: the material most tools break on
The machine does not wait
for staffing.
The bottleneck above was not the knowledge but the number of people. That is the difference this machine makes. Once it is set up it runs on, even when the operator starts on something else or the shift is over.
That changes the arithmetic of a workshop. A job no longer has to wait until someone is free to stand beside it, and the hours that free up go to the work where craftsmanship really counts. For an organisation that cannot simply expand its staffing, that is not a side benefit but the heart of it.
Chosen twice,
by two organisations.
Woensdrecht is the second place within the Netherlands armed forces where one of our machines stands. The first went in 2021 to the Central Mechanical Workshop of the Army. Those are two different organisations with their own tasks and their own judgement; all they share is the bar they hold a supplier to.
That we cleared it twice has to do with more than the machine itself. We design and build in the Netherlands, and the engineering and service sit in the same building. Whoever calls gets someone on the line who knows the machine.
