NEW WATER JET MACHINE FOR PRECISE BATHROOM CONSTRUCTION

Due to their unparalleled precision, Thorsten Peters and Karlheinz Gronewold rely on water jet technology for workpiece processing in high-quality bathroom construction – especially when it comes to bathrooms in ships and washbasins for hotels, where extremely minimal tolerances are important.

The two managing partners of the company Junge steindesign in Neukamperfehn, East Frisia, took over the company nine years ago. At that time, the previous owner, Hartmut Junge, wanted to retire without a successor. Previously, Peters and Gronewold had already managed the company Trauco Steindesign, about ten kilometers away, which emerged in 1999 from the “Marble Cutting Operation” department of the Trauco Group.

Luminous water jet: When cutting the particularly hard quartz components in ceramic and quartz composite material, the cold water jet begins to glow. However, the Resato machine ACM 2040 is not impressed by the hardness of the material.

Gronewold and Peters combined the machinery and other equipment of both companies in the machine hall of the newly acquired company and have since continuously invested in new machines – most recently in a water jet cutting machine ACM 2040 from the Dutch complete manufacturer Resato.

As Peters explains, two arguments in particular were decisive for the decision in favor of Resato. Firstly, the support: “The company Resato is about an hour’s drive from us, and they promised us a technician on the same day in case of any problems.”

This reliability has proven itself. The decision against the previous manufacturer, whose service technicians sometimes took up to two weeks, was therefore absolutely correct – because a longer machine failure is simply unacceptable.

Secondly, the two managing directors see an enormous advantage in the Flex-Zone typical of Resato (as we reported in STEIN 9/2024). While machines from other manufacturers are either inaccessible monoblock systems with closed doors or open constructions with surrounding laser barriers, the Resato machine is the only one that allows loading and unloading during operation. Only in the Flex-Zone that moves with the machine’s portal does the direct danger area – namely the cutting head – remain secured during cutting.

MACHINE ENSEMBLE WITH MINIMAL DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES

Not only the new machine, which cuts particularly precisely with abrasive sand and a water jet, is convincing at Junge steindesign, but also other large machines meet the high requirements of the demanding clientele – especially tolerances of less than one millimeter.

In addition, due to its history, the company has “many, many older machines that can step in if a machine breaks down or is being serviced,” as production manager Rüdiger Schelken emphasizes.

Thanks to the precise cuts of the water jet machine, even grain patterns in the material can be guided almost seamlessly around corners.

At Junge, mainly natural stone and some quartz composite are processed. Recently, the processing of ceramics has also increased significantly – a clear trend.

The business is based on several pillars, which proves to be an advantage in times of crisis. During the Corona pandemic, for example, the gastronomy and shipbuilding sectors collapsed from 100 to zero, reports Thorsten Peters.

In this phase, however, the tombstone sector taken over with the company acquisition, as well as the classic construction business, were able to compensate for the losses.

Currently, however, there are hardly any more single-family home projects. Instead, Junge steindesign manufactures many stairwells for multi-family houses and continues to receive orders from the cruise ship building industry – an area in which Gronewold and Peters have been active for 25 years.

The bathroom furniture program is also currently enjoying increasing demand – another stable pillar of the company.

The economic driving force bathroom furniture program: The high-quality mechanical equipment makes solid-look washbasins from own production possible at Junge steindesign.

Waterjet system with USP: Since the machine table can only not be accessed within the “Flex-Zone” marked with yellow sheets during the cutting process, the Resato water jet machine allows the operator greater flexibility than systems from other manufacturers.
